The Halo — A Circle of Quiet
The Halo started as a question I asked myself one evening when the house was quiet and my yarn basket was open on the floor.
What if a bag could feel like a held breath?
I'd been making bags with structure for months — bobbles, loops, sharp little silhouettes that announced themselves the moment you walked into a room. And I loved them. I still do. But that evening I wanted to make something quieter. Something round. Something that wouldn't try so hard.
I sketched a circle. Then another. Then a halo — the soft ring of light around the moon on certain nights in Gurgaon when the air is still and the sky forgets to be loud. That's what I wanted the bag to feel like. A little circle of calm you could carry on your shoulder.
The first version was wrong. Too floppy, too shapeless — it sagged the moment you picked it up, like it had given up halfway through being a bag. I unravelled the whole thing and started again. The second version was too rigid. Beautiful, but it sat on my arm like a piece of armour. Wrong feeling entirely.
The third version was The Halo.
It took me almost twenty hours. I worked the stitches tight enough to hold the round shape but loose enough that the bag still breathed. I redid the strap three times because I wanted it to sit exactly where the curve of your shoulder begins — not higher, not lower, exactly there.
I made it in ivory first because ivory is honest. It doesn't hide anything. Every stitch shows. If something is off by a single millimetre, ivory will tell on you. And once the ivory one felt right, I knew the shape was right too.
Then I made it in all the colours I'd been quietly collecting in my head — a soft sand, a warm stone, a muted sage, a deep charcoal, a blush that looks like the inside of a shell. Six versions of the same quiet circle. Each one with its own mood.
I named it The Halo because that's what it became. Not loud. Not trying. Just a little ring of calm, made by hand, ready to belong to someone.
If you find one that's yours, I hope it slows your day down a little. That's all I wanted it to do.
