The Pebble — Something the River Made

Some shapes you don't design. You just notice them.

The Pebble began on a riverbank. We were on a short trip out of Gurgaon, somewhere green and slow, and I was doing what I always do near water — picking up stones. I found one that fit my palm so perfectly it felt like it had been waiting for me. Smooth on one side, slightly hollowed on the other, the kind of shape a river takes a thousand years to make.

I put it in my pocket. I didn't know yet that it was going to become a bag.

Weeks later, back at my kitchen table, I was sketching and the same shape kept coming back. Round but not a circle. Soft but with a clear silhouette. A little dip on one side that your fingers would naturally fall into. I realised I was drawing the stone.

So I decided to make it.

The Pebble was harder to crochet than I expected. A perfect round is easy. A perfect circle is easy. A shape that pretends to be careless — that's almost impossible. Every stitch had to do two jobs: hold the form, and look like it wasn't trying. I unravelled the first one four times.

The hollowed grip was the part I was most stubborn about. I wanted it to feel inevitable — like the bag had always had it, like nobody had to design it in. That meant decreasing stitches in a curve that flowed naturally instead of stepping down. It took me an entire Sunday to get one side right. Then another full evening to get the other side to match.

I made The Pebble in cobalt first. I don't know why — usually I start with a neutral. But that day I wanted a colour with a pulse. A blue so deep it felt like dusk. When I finished it I sat with it on the table for a long time, just looking. It was the first bag I'd made where I felt like the shape and the colour were doing the same thing.

Then came ivory, sand, blush, sage, charcoal. Six pebbles. Each one with the same quiet hollow, the same handmade weight, the same sixteen-to-twenty hours of me at the table.

I named it The Pebble because that's what it is. Something the river would have made if the river made bags. Smooth, certain, quietly itself.

If you carry one, I hope it fits your palm the way that first stone fit mine. Like it was already yours.
